Coaching in the Garden

When I first started my coaching practice in 2003 I wondered endlessly about the ‘right’ way to run my business. I used to think about the right location to see clients and whether to ‘see’ them at all since much life coaching takes place over the phone. I wonder whether coaching over the phone has become ubiquitous because it’s sold to coaches by coach training companies. It’s easier for coaching training companies to get would-be coaches to buy into the courses if they (the would-be coach) think they have no ceiling on the number of clients they have potential access to. The world is a global marketplace we’re told.

Well I’ve found - and my clients too - that we really rather like seeing one another face to face. This week we’ve taken to my garden and it’s been really rather nice to talk, discuss, share ideas and draw up action plans whilst getting sun-tanned faces and listening to the twittering of the baby blue-tits who’ve taken nest in the Red Oak in our garden. Whilst seeing clients face to face puts a limit on my ‘market’ I think it helps coach and client to bond and brings an extra depth to our relationship. I usually see clients face to face for the first session and then often we work on the phone. Sometimes coming into my space is what clients want every time as it’s a change of scene for them apart from anything else.

Next week I’m going to see a client in her garden whilst baby sleeps. And if he doesn’t sleep then maybe I’ll have a babe arms to give mum a break whilst we talk. I belive it isn’t the location per se that matters but that open, comfortable conversation can happen. Who knows where I’ll be next week….

I’m more committed to my coach, and more receptive to her ideas, in a face-to-face, comfortable environment. On the phone, I find my thoughts wandering, I read my emails when they ping in, that kind of thing. I think that phone and webinar are great for coaches to give out pearls of general wisdom, but not for the real personal stuff
